“Big Red” was flown by Citadel Cadets in 1861 as they held defenses at Fort Moultrie on Morris Island against Union supply ships. It is the unofficial flag of The Citadel and remains their spirit flag to this day. It is believed that the first shots fired in the Civil War were those fired by Citadel Cadets against the federal steamer “Star of the West”.
