Launched in 1915, but not moved to combat until WW2, the Arizona was bombed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. After a bomb detonated in a powder magazine, the battleship exploded violently and sank, with the loss of 1,177 officers and crewmen. Unlike many of the other ships sunk or damaged that day, the Arizona was irreparably damaged by the force of the magazine explosion
Tragic fact: There were 37 confirmed pairs or trios of brothers assigned to the USS Arizona on December 7, 1941.
